On Wednesday, March 16, 2022, John Damian, honored Vietnam veteran, passed away at the
age of 74.
John was born on the island of Guam in 1947 to Andres and Emilia Damian. He was the middle
of eleven children. In 1953, the family moved stateside to Vallejo, CA. John attended Hogan
High School and was drafted into the United States Army in 1969. He served in Vietnam and
after a long recovery from sustaining injuries, finished his service time at Fort Ord in Monterey,
CA. He was a decorated veteran earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star among other medals
and honors. After Vietnam, John worked for the US Postal Service in Vallejo for many years
before relocating to Madera, CA. In 2018, he retired after over 40 years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Andres and Emilia Damian as well as siblings,
Edward (Eddie), Edith (Doug) Davis, Richard and Frank. He is survived by his long time, loving
partner, Sharon Anderson, his children, William (Orasio Gutierrez) and Gerica (Alex) Coad,
grandchildren, Macy, Chloe and Leo Coad, siblings, Orilda (Manny) Concepcion, Thomas, Mary
Moore, Solita Holland, Cecilia (Chuck) Krek and Alfred (Fred), as well as numerous nieces,
nephews and their children.
John loved taking road trips to see the country with Sharon. Some of his favorite places were
Monterey and Yosemite. He also enjoyed visiting Old Albuquerque and Wichita National
Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. John was an avid sports fan, especially baseball. He played in
recreational leagues while in Vallejo. He enjoyed music and was a member of the Mini Singers
Singing group at Hogan High School. He also played the piano and had a knack for learning new
music. After retirement, he enjoyed having lunch and spending time with his friends and
coworkers.
A memorial will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA on Thursday,
May 26, 2022 at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to an
organization that John was a member of and remained very important to him, the Purple Heart
Foundation at purpleheartfoundation.org.
